The Guy With The Eyepatch
We left velorution at 9:30 to start riding north along the shore of Lake Superior. We didn't have a plan for where we'd stop, except that we'd pedal about 100km. There were some decent hills leading out of The Soo (that's what the locals call Sault Ste. Marie.), followed by a long and fun descent. We took a side road and got chased by two dogs and then passed by what we believe was a wolf, which then stalked us for about 100m. Could have been a coyote-wolf hybrid I suppose. I'd never seen any wild Canis species that big before!
It was rainy and foggy the while time we rode along Lake Superior, but the shortline looks cool. I'm excited for a sunny day so I can swim around its rocky shores.
There is not much going on between The Soo and Wawa, for 230km. We stopped at a provincial park but the visitor center was closed and the water wasn't potable. We stopped at a gas station which claimed to be the only fuel for the next 150km, which I believe.
I have more to say about today but I suggested to Robin that I'd like to pedal from sunrise (5:30am) to sunset (9:30pm) to celebrate the summer solstice tomorrow. She thought that was a great idea. Now I have to get up at 4:45...
... to be continued, good night!
EDIT - Forgot to continue this. In short, we drafted off each other in the rain for a while, pedalled up an 800ft surprise hill, and stopped at a Chip Truck just before it closed. The chip truck owner asked us where we were staying and we told him we would look for a place to camp. He told us he is a caretaker for some cottages on the lake, and that we could camp at the end of the private road. So we followed him down there after he closed up the chip truck, and it was a great spot, right on the water. As he was leaving he said, "If anyone bothers you here, just tell them you know the guy with the eyepatch!"
