7-Day Forecast: Smoke
The days between Prince George and Kitwanga were all the same. Temperatures above 30C, smoky skies which obscured any views, and stung my eyes if I went fast. The highest temperature I saw, on a sign on a bank, said 38C. I spent my nights in Vanderhoof, Fraser Lake, Burns Lake, Houston, and Smithers. There's nothing notable about any of them. I'm sure they would be nicer in better conditions.
On the last day, when I was headed to Kitwanga, the smoke finally cleared. I saw Hudson Bay Mountain, among others. The road followed the Bulkley River most of the way, which provided some nice vistas.
I stayed at the Municipal Campground in Kitwanga. This would be as far North as I would go on this trip. (And as far North as I've ever been in my lifle!) For the past few weeks I had been planning on riding the Cassiar Highway to the Yukon, and then down to Skagway, AK, and taking a ferry back. However, given the abnormally hot weather and smoke conditions, I lost some interest in doing so. I'd like to return one day and ride many of the highways north of here: Cassiar, Dempster, Top of the World, Dalton, and Denali. Some cyclists I crossed paths with had ridden them and had had good times.
