Winnipeg

Shortly after arriving in Winnipeg, I wrote the following review to a friend: "Winnipeg sucks btw. The streets are dusty and the air smells bad, the people are fat, and the beer is bland. I wouldn't recommend going here on purpose."

I stayed at the University of Winnipeg, which runs one of their dorm buildings as a hostel during the summer. It was near downtown and was a nice place to stay. I asked the girl who checked me in where I could go for Mexican food, and she said, "You're in Winnipeg."

I walked to a neighborhood called Osborn and found a Mexican place and ate enchiladas. It was a lot of food and was satisfying.

The next morning I went to breakfast at a place called the Tallest Poppy and it was awesome. The menu was halirous and the server was very friendly. I ordered the Chicken & Waffles and asked her if 10am was too early to order a beer. She responded, "I've already served a bottle of wine today."

I spent the afternoon strolling the city. I went to a bike shop and bought 2 spare tubes and some new, red, bar tape. I went to the Peasant Cookery for dinner and ate Shepards Pie. It was only okay, but was at least made with lamb. (Shepards shepard sheep, not cows.)

Robin texted me and told me I needed to listen to 'One Great City' by The Weakerthans. I did so, and I recommend anyone reading this does as well. It is a love song dedicated to the city of Winnipeg, and contains the best five word description of commuting via public transport I've ever heard, "The crowded riders' restlessness enunciates."
